RTL II creates a petabyte-scale active archive using Scality RING


Scality Interviews Hans-Josef Lauer, Manager of IT Operations at RTL II, a top German TV Station who built a petabyte-scale Active Archive with the Scality RING software.

“RTL II is a classical TV Broadcaster but by now it’s transforming more and more into a digital media house. We not only have content for the classical TV channels but also for online purposes for YouTube and also use the social networks to connect more and more people for those channels.

rtl 2There are several challenges and the most important challenge is that we need more and more space for the videos, because of the 4K production and also the online creation. Before Scality we have a classical, common set up with two datacenters and several SANs. We have one for the high-res material, one for the low-res material, and one for the databases and user data, and we mirrored the data between the two datacenters.

We think that the…especially in the storage part, there will be more and more software-defined things coming up, because people don’t want to have black boxes as hardware or anything; they want to use standard IT components. That’s what we also see in the broadcast environment.

Scality has several advantages for us. When we look for new storage technology we have several requirements; we want to use more standard IT hardware to have less complexity, and we want to use standard transfer protocols like Samba, NFS, or FTP. This is supported by Scality because they say ok, and they deliver the software and it’s equal with what hardware you bring in and that is a big advantage we see in it.

From the technical side, it was, for us, it was easy to deploy it because with the standard hardware and the Red Hat operation system we could deploy it on our own – and only the software part [Scality RING] was done by Scality and it was easy.

When we brought in the RING we also established the 10 GB network technology. And with this and the RING we are able to speed up the transfers by 10 times against the old system; that’s a big advantage.

The performance of the RING and the different access nodes allows us to have more streams than before. That is quite important because, especially for the online things, there are many people who want to access the storage parallel to get material out of it, to edit it, and to bring it then online.

For the business, I think, one major benefit is that we don’t have to fear additional space requirements because it’s very easy to expand the RING. We have done this one time, when we went from two to four petabyte of capacity, and it was remotely done by Scality and with no impact on the production system.
