Dusseldorf SDS Day The SDS Day tour continues.  Dusseldorf was the site for Scality’s first Software-Defined Storage Day in Germany on Thursday the 21st of September.  A crowd of nearly 50 people joined the event held at the BeOne conference center near the Rhine.  As attendees gathered before the start of the program, they had an opportunity to mingle and speak with representatives from Scality and our partners HPE, Cisco, Ctera, Veeam and Owncloud. To kick things off, Peter Kocur, Scality’s country manager for DACH, welcomed attendees and introduced Erwan Menard, president and COO of Scality to start the program. .

I was reading a great article recently called “What separates us from the animals?” by Thomas Suddendorf. In it, he looks at the key differences between humans and animals but interestingly distills those difference down to just two: our open-ended ability to imagine and reflect on different situations our deep-seated drive to link our scenario-building minds together We’re an incredibly innovative and creative people, who also have an amazing ability to bond together and solve great challenges. It is with these thoughts in mind that I decided to join Scality as Chief Marketing Officer. I wanted to join a team.

It’s not every day you get to ride the wave of a fundamental shift in technology. I’d like to talk a bit about how I am staying afloat. My introduction to shared storage was with the original HP EVA series. They were pretty awesome – a single, user-friendly web interface could get you from power up to production in a couple of hours. LUNs (Logical Unit Numbers) so massive that they could host upwards of 20 virtual machines were automatically spread across hundreds of drives, utilizing the aggregate capacity and performance to deliver what would eventually be coined ‘private clouds’..

The object storage paradox

Next month, it will have been exactly six years since I wrote my first object storage blog, even though I didn’t mention object storage in that specific article. I had my head in the clouds as our early cloud startup was being acquired by Sun Microsystem when someone asked me to write a piece on EMC’s new baby, Atmos so I took a spin at it. That was object storage before object storage.

Object storage

There are two types of traditional storage systems: block storage, which manages data as blocks within sectors and tracks, and file storage, which manages files organized into hierarchical file systems. Block storage is used by Storage Area Networks (SANs), where a SAN disk array is connected via a SCSI or Fiber Channel network to servers. File Storage exist in two forms: File Servers and Networked Attached Storage (NAS). NAS is a file server appliance. File Storage provides standard network file sharing protocols to exchange file content between systems. Standard file sharing protocols include NFS, SMB (CIFS), and AFP. Index tables.

Object API, a long debate…

December 16th – API or not API ? that is the question… Most of the time users can’t really choose and decision is controlled by application. In 2 words, if the application is a commercial one, users don’t have access to the code and can’t embed any specific code. In that case, if the application requires a file access and users pick an object storage solution, the only possible glue between the two is a gateway. October 24th – Gigaom recently published a new study (available here) about ExaScale data center storage and how object storage solutions, at least some of them, could address challenges introduced by that scale. 4 solutions were selected by Gigaom analyst to sustain and illustrate the study: 2 vendors with Cleversafe, the pioneer of Object Storage, and Scality, the alternative fast growth player with some similar characteristics and 2 open source solutions represented by Open Stack Swift and Inktank Ceph.

Of Clouds, Storage and Openness
