Meet Scality Team Member: Juan Altamar
Scality’s leaders have created Le Club in order to recognize and reward team members selected each year for their exceptional contribution to the company.
Together with this acknowledgment, Le Club members are also offered the opportunity of taking a trip together, to rest and enjoy the Scality spirit outside the workplace.
For the year 2016, 16 employees have been chosen. Scality will publish a portrait of different team member once a week.
“My wife likes to say that I’ve never met a stranger.” To all who know him, Juan Altamar is first and foremost an extremely sociable and friendly person. Every time he goes to a restaurant, he gets to know the waiters and likes to joke around with them, and when he takes a plane, he ends up with a new friend.
As a sales director for Scality, Juan uses his talents to his advantage. “Juan has very good relationship skills with the clients. He speaks to them and they immediately like him,” shares one of his colleagues. Juan adds, “I enjoy the interaction with the customers, getting to know them. I tend not to forget names or conversations. I can remember the fact that a person has four boys, or that the first one is same age as my older one. These details matter to people because they feel there is a connection that maybe they don’t have with others, which helps me move along with my commercial discussion.”
Juan’s friendly personality is far from being his only strength. Underlying this is his desire to give the best customer service possible. “I’m not doing my job solely for the sake of the sales,” he says. “I try to see things from the customer’s perspective and how I can make it work for them in order to solve their problems.”
This devotion to his clients started very early in Juan’s career. First, in the hotel industry where, after having just obtained his business degree, he helped implement quality standards for a well-known hotel chain. Then later as a consultant for a large consulting firm, he made recommendations to clients that they would put in place to improve staff organisation.
Eager to learn, Juan decided to go back to school to acquire even more skills. After having earned his MBA, he was recruited by a big telecom operator as product manager. Thereafter he served as a sales manager at a software company. Presently, he has been working at Scality for two and a half years. “What I like about this company is it’s still relatively small but with great ambition. Here I feel I can really move the needle,” he confides. True to his word, Juan has greatly contributed to the success of Scality by securing numerous contracts with big telecom operators, his specialty domain.
Ambitious as ever, Juan doesn’t want to stop here. His desire would be to run a company in the future. “I’ve got a good capacity for interacting and motivating different groups of people,” he states. “Being in charge would be a great challenge for me and a great achievement.”
Before such a time of great responsibilities, Juan wants to make the most of having some free time to spend with other people. He loves playing sports with his friends, and in particular, soccer with his two sons. He’s also into good food and cooking for people, a passion that his mother passed on to him when he was a child. “When I go to different cities, I never go to a chain restaurant but to the best local place,” he says. “I’m not looking at the menu, I just say, tell me what you are best known for and I will have one of those.” Juan never misses a chance to get the most out of life.
