Scality’s leaders have created Le Club to recognize and reward team members selected each year for their exceptional contribution to the company. 

Together with this acknowledgment, Le Club members are also offered the opportunity of taking a trip together, to rest and enjoy the Scality spirit outside the workplace.

Last year, Scality won a big contract with a major Australian company. The one who contributed the most to this success was Erik Julin. “Erik made only one trip to assist the sales manager, and this one meeting with the customer was enough to convince them to buy our product,” recalls one of his colleagues. Erik inspires respect and confidence in all who cross his path. A senior director for messaging and alliances, Erik is better known as the “go to guy” for email storage since he is the one with a deep knowledge in this area.

After having worked 20 years in the email domain, Erik has acquired a great deal of experience on the subject. Having been a sales engineer and an email systems architect, he knows his field like the back of his hand. Everyday his clients take advantage of his great expertise in order to know which Scality features correspond the best to their needs. “I know the people, I know the problems, and I have good visibility about how the industry is evolving,” he confides. “I always try my best to figure out what the customers want and how to meet their requirements.” One of his colleagues adds, “Erik is very committed to his clients. He works really hard to make sure that everything is taken care of.”

At the beginning of his career, however, it seemed as if Erik wasn’t really destined to do what he does today. Interested in mathematics and computers since he was young, Erik completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering and then worked towards a doctorate in computational fluid dynamics. After that, he worked as an engineer for the US Navy, dealing with supercomputers. He thought he would continue to do that for a while, but was soon recruited by one of his vendors. They put him on an account that nobody wanted, which turned out to have a rapidly growing email service. “I was dead set against it initially,” he says. “But after a while I realised that there were some very challenging problems in this field too, which made me stay.”

Today, Erik doesn’t regret having taken this career route. First, because he appreciates enormously the clients that he works with and those with whom he has built a long term relationship, some notably for nearly 20 years. He also loves his job because it allows him to go all over the world. “I travel at least every other week,” he notes. “Just this year, I’ve been to India, Japan, and have done several trips to Europe and around the US.”

Erik has been working for Scality remotely for 3 years from his home, in Boston. He feels very happy. “I like the hero mentality there is in the company,” he says. “People work really hard and are taking success or failure extraordinarily personally; it suits me. I also like the fact that Scality is still young enough to have room for very considerable growth and I want to contribute to that.”

Outside of work, Erik likes to have a bit of peace and quiet, spending time with his family, whom he really misses when he is travelling the world. He loves fishing with his son, gardening, and also hiking with him. He also enjoys building furniture in his workshop. “It’s a complete cut from work,” he confides. “I like the idea that what I’ve built will last for a long time, in contrary to the software industry, where everything is changing fast.”
