I was reading a great article recently called “What separates us from the animals?” by Thomas Suddendorf. In it, he looks at the key differences between humans and animals but interestingly distills those difference down to just two: our open-ended ability to imagine and reflect on different situations our deep-seated drive to link our scenario-building minds together We’re an incredibly innovative and creative people, who also have an amazing ability to bond together and solve great challenges. It is with these thoughts in mind that I decided to join Scality as Chief Marketing Officer. I wanted to join a team.

It’s not every day you get to ride the wave of a fundamental shift in technology. I’d like to talk a bit about how I am staying afloat. My introduction to shared storage was with the original HP EVA series. They were pretty awesome – a single, user-friendly web interface could get you from power up to production in a couple of hours. LUNs (Logical Unit Numbers) so massive that they could host upwards of 20 virtual machines were automatically spread across hundreds of drives, utilizing the aggregate capacity and performance to deliver what would eventually be coined ‘private clouds’..

Storage alternatives
I used Uber for the first time a few weeks ago (I like to walk, sue me). It was jaw-droppingly awesome. I had set it up in advance, which took a few minutes, so when I needed it, I simply pressed a few buttons on my HTC (my companion’s iPhone failed in the same task seconds earlier – haha). Uber told me when to expect a driver (5 minutes) and they were right. They knew where I was and where I wanted to go. We were there in minutes. At the end, I just said “thank you” and got out..

Scality RING
Scality has long predicted that the Cloud and the continued explosive growth of unstructured data would create major shifts in the storage industry. Flash would disrupt transactional storage systems particularly in areas like high frequency trading. Software-defined scale-out storage leveraging commodity servers for use in Cloud delivery would disrupt traditional, proprietary enterprise storage systems.

April 7th – Scality selects Aspera, the market leader for large file transfer, the reference in Media and Entertainment market. Certified on the RING platform at the file level on connector nodes, Aspera fasp engines leverage the parallelism of the architecture to deliver really high transfer rates. Multiple deployment examples can coexist: Scality at the source and destination, Scality to/from any site with Aspera running (an other file server or NAS, an Amazon Aspera EC2 instance)

March 17th – Beyond Scality and SGI oem agreement for the RING sold as SGI OmniStor, SGI wished to validate and integrate the RING with SGI DMF. Data Migration Facility, the famous SGI solution, largely deployed and adopted in technical computing environment is a well known and recognized product. Considering the RING, one of the leading massively scalable storage platform in the industry, based on object storage technologies is an obvious choice for SGI. How data manager could deal with the real data deluge they live every day?

The Ecosystem is a must

December 18th – Data Centers represents the Holy Grail of IT since large and visible internet companies demonstrate their capability to redesign and revolutionize the heart of corporate IT. They also promote, validate and build real high-end infrastructure on commodity hardware. This ange represents the first dimension of the ecosystem for large scale IT environment, the capability to be hardware agnostic meaning that the difference comes from software. Scality is a software only solution deployed on x86 “classic” servers transforming a rack of servers into a large storage pool.

Object storage

There are two types of traditional storage systems: block storage, which manages data as blocks within sectors and tracks, and file storage, which manages files organized into hierarchical file systems. Block storage is used by Storage Area Networks (SANs), where a SAN disk array is connected via a SCSI or Fiber Channel network to servers. File Storage exist in two forms: File Servers and Networked Attached Storage (NAS). NAS is a file server appliance. File Storage provides standard network file sharing protocols to exchange file content between systems. Standard file sharing protocols include NFS, SMB (CIFS), and AFP. Index tables.

Object API, a long debate…

December 16th – API or not API ? that is the question… Most of the time users can’t really choose and decision is controlled by application. In 2 words, if the application is a commercial one, users don’t have access to the code and can’t embed any specific code. In that case, if the application requires a file access and users pick an object storage solution, the only possible glue between the two is a gateway. Now when users design their own application, a decision must be taken between several available object API. Among others people have choice between an.

San Francisco – October 26th, 2012 As Internet use continues to skyrocket, the volume of files being produced, shared and stored climbs at a tremendous pace. The traditional methods of storing this kind of ‘unstructured data’ show signs of failing under the strain of this completely unanticipated load. In reaction, system administrators work furiously to plug the fissures appearing in their infrastructure, and CIOs cast about urgently trying to assess and source potential solutions to these tectonic shifts.

Of Clouds, Storage and Openness

San Francisco, CA – Tuesday, September 18th As I have previously talked about on this blog, there has been a significant amount of discussions about the Openness of the Cloud this year. In the League of Clouds, I was saying that it is necessary for the industry to start working on a set of standards used by every cloud Service or Software provider to ensure interoperability, which will in turn limit lock-in, boost adoption and in the end benefit all.
