Object storage

There are two types of traditional storage systems: block storage, which manages data as blocks within sectors and tracks, and file storage, which manages files organized into hierarchical file systems. Block storage is used by Storage Area Networks (SANs), where a SAN disk array is connected via a SCSI or Fiber Channel network to servers. File Storage exist in two forms: File Servers and Networked Attached Storage (NAS). NAS is a file server appliance. File Storage provides standard network file sharing protocols to exchange file content between systems. Standard file sharing protocols include NFS, SMB (CIFS), and AFP. Index tables.

Object API, a long debate…

December 16th – API or not API ? that is the question… Most of the time users can’t really choose and decision is controlled by application. In 2 words, if the application is a commercial one, users don’t have access to the code and can’t embed any specific code. In that case, if the application requires a file access and users pick an object storage solution, the only possible glue between the two is a gateway. Now when users design their own application, a decision must be taken between several available object API. Among others people have choice between an.

December 11th – Today’s announcement from Cleversafe concerning its two new Slicestor appliances and its Cache Vault software validates what Scality has had on offer for a long time. One of the Slicestor models is packed with SSDs to deliver high IOPS, or more accurately, objects per second (OPS) for small objects that require one copy only (simple replication). The second element in the new Cleversafe offering is Cache Vault, a free software option available with ClevOS 3.1. The idea behind these products is to address the poor IO performance behavior Cleversafe has had with storage and retrieval of small.

December 6th – Adoption is growing fast for Scality during the last few months with several various use cases. As we target large environments with tons of small or large files, we see that users started to consider the RING platform for different usages. In fact, many of them begun with one specific need and several months of usages later associated with a strong real trust in the platform, they realize the flexibility of the RING and started to enable new connectors for new applications.

December 2nd – ExaScale represents the new challenge for IT leaders trying to find on the market some new approaches helping them build the Data Center of tomorrow. Scality recently started some studies and collect multiple sources of informations. What we discover can be summarized in a few key points that must be considered when you think about such evolution.

– Marc Staimer, President & CDS Dragon Slayer Consulting On 17 September 2013, GigaOM released a white paper by this analyst, “How object storage tackles thorny ‘exascale’ problems”. Many readers labor under the false assumption that the thorny exascale problems are unique to those with exabytes of storage. They are not. These problems exist and are just as pernicious at the petascale (petabytes of storage capacity) and even large terascale (hundreds of terabytes) levels.  So why is this false perception so pervasive?

The Project The Earth Observation Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany uses remote sensing and custom analytic methodologies to tackle tough issues in environmental and climate science, mobility and planning, civil security and the prevention and management of natural catastrophes. The Photogrammetry and Image Analysis department, headed by Professor Peter Reinartz required a high performance, durable storage solution to store its satellite image data.
October 24th – Gigaom recently published a new study (available here) about ExaScale data center storage and how object storage solutions, at least some of them, could address challenges introduced by that scale. 4 solutions were selected by Gigaom analyst to sustain and illustrate the study: 2 vendors with Cleversafe, the pioneer of Object Storage, and Scality, the alternative fast growth player with some similar characteristics and 2 open source solutions represented by Open Stack Swift and Inktank Ceph.
