Meet Scality Team Member: William Dunand

Scality’s leaders have created Le Club in order to recognize and reward team members selected each year for their exceptional contribution to the company. 

Together with this acknowledgment, Le Club members are also offered the opportunity of taking a trip together, to rest and enjoy the Scality spirit outside the workplace.

For the year 2016, 16 employees have been chosen. Scality will publish a portrait of different team member once a week.

When he was 24 years old, William Dunand went to travel around Japan with just his backpack, a few words in Japanese, and a little savings. It was supposed to be just a short trip, but William liked it so much he decided to stay. He made some friends, learned to speak Japanese perfectly, found a job, and met his wife. It has now been 9 years since the start of this adventure. “I tend to feel more at home in Japan than I do in France now,” he confides. “I like the way the Japanese are polite, calm and reserved. This way of behaving suits me perfectly.” William is passionate about foreign cultures and languages, inquisitive and open-minded.

William’s qualities are highly valued at Scality. As a service and support engineer, his role is to solve any problems that could appear after the Scality software has been installed at a client. In Japan, more than anywhere else, the client is king, they can be extremely demanding and they prefer to speak Japanese only. As William speaks fluent Japanese and is highly knowledgeable on the subject of Japanese etiquette, he is made for the job. He understands exactly what the customers want and serves as an interpreter when his English or French speaking colleagues come to Japan, making sure that the two parties understand each other well.

However, it wasn’t easy for William when he first joined Scality two years ago as he was on his own for a few months to take care of the Japanese office. He had to learn by himself as quickly as possible how Scality’s software works in the tiniest detail in order to fulfil the expectations of his clients. “They want to understand everything and ask very precise questions to which you have to be capable of answering very quickly,” he explains. Being a hard worker, with a big thirst for knowledge, William succeeded.

Today, the results are clear. “William is extremely devoted to his clients,” says one of his colleagues. “When one of them asks a question or needs something, he is immediately available.” For example, a year ago, when part of a data center—where Scality’s servers are located—was damaged by a fire, William worked day and night for several weeks, including weekends, to get back the data stored by his clients. They were so impressed by his work that they are strongly considering using Scality for their future projects.

William also shows the same dedication to his coworkers. “I try my best to help my Japanese colleagues with their integration into the company and to explain to them in their language certain technical details of Scality’s software,” he says.

William is really happy in his work and in his private life. Just this year, he has been blessed with a little boy. Just like himself, he would like his son to have a multicultural outlook.“It’s just an idea but I would like to go and live in an English-speaking country with my family to have more new experiences and so that my son could learn to speak a third language,” he says. For William, the adventure continues.
