Vinh Tao never stops thinking about computer science. Even outside his work, he can’t help but continue to try to figure out new ways to improve the software solutions he is working on. “I need to keep my mind busy all the time, otherwise it’s not good for my creativity,” he confides. It must be said that computers play a central role in Vinh’s life. A development engineer for Scality, he is also a PhD student at Pierre et Marie Curie University Paris. When he is not developing a new product for Scality, he is either writing a scientific paper or getting ready for his graduation which will be at the end of the year.

To satisfy his appetite for computer science, Vinh has to make sacrifices. He can count the number of weekends that he hasn’t worked on one hand and late nights are the norm for him. It is also difficult for him to live far from his relatives at home, in Vietnam and South Korea. “Of course I miss them a lot, even if we talk on Skype everyday and I fly out to see them twice a year,” he says. “But I had the strong desire to explore new things really deeply in my field, and that’s why I came here.”

Born and raised in Vietnam, Vinh was always encouraged to follow his dreams. His parents have supported him throughout and handed down values such as hard work and the fact that a good education is one of the keys to success. After having earned his engineering degree at Hanoi University of Technology, Vinh went to live in South Korea where he completed his master’s degree at Pohang University of Science and Technology and where he worked for the university as a researcher for two years. It was then he decided to expand his knowledge in computer sciences even further by pursuing a PhD while at the same time working as part of the Scality research team.

Today, after two years at Scality, Vinh, at 31 years old, is very happy in the path he has chosen. “At Scality, I can fully express my creativity and I feel really useful because I know that, if my innovations are good enough, they will be adopted,” he reveals. His passion for his work inspires the respect of his colleagues. “Vinh really believes in his ideas which often turn out just right,” says his manager. “I also really appreciate his sociability, his modesty, and his thoughtful nature. These are indispensable qualities needed when working in our research team.”

Once he has his PhD, Vinh still sees his career path in research. “I might continue working at Scality or become a university professor. The most important thing for me is continuing to work freely as a researcher on important problems,” he confides.
