Meet Scality Team Member: Samuel Lugassy

Scality’s leaders have created Le Club in order to recognize and reward team members selected each year for their exceptional contribution to the company.

Together with this acknowledgment, Le Club members are also offered the opportunity of taking a trip together, to rest and enjoy the Scality spirit outside the workplace.

For the year 2016, 16 employees have been chosen. Scality will publish a portrait of different team member once a week.

When he’s not working or looking after his two little girls, Samuel Lugassy tends to his next greatest passion, that of making cardboard furniture. “This material can be transformed so easily, all you need is a cutter and some glue,” he explains. “I can let my creativity run wild. I try all the different designs possible until I’m happy with the result.”

The 46-year-old computer engineer expresses this creative streak also in his job. As a sales engineer, his goal is to convince his potential clients of the advanced technical qualities of Scality’s software. To do so, he has spent the last three years creatively designing and constantly improving his own specific computing tools. Thanks to many long hours spent on the job and in his spare time, the fruits of his labours are impressive. In just a few clicks, he can produce the best made-to-measure solution for each client to be able to store their data. Another tool allows the clients to see the long term cost of a system in comparison to what the competition is offering. These precious applications, now used by all of Scality’s sales engineers, have no doubt contributed to the success of the company.

Samuel’s curiosity has led him down a rather non-traditional career path. After getting his engineering degree, he decided to explore several different fields in computer engineering. Without stopping for breath, he worked in databases, voice over IP technologies, WiFi networks, and data roaming, among other areas. He also served as computing director for the world’s biggest manga publishing firm where he started a television channel, a video on demand platform, and an online shop. As someone who is so multi-skilled, it’s important to face new challenges often and be inspired. If not, there’s a risk that his creative spark will go out. This same spirit inspired him to escape to Japan for six years. There he lived “an experience that was totally foreign and beneficial,” he shares.

At Scality, Samuel can satisfy his appetite for exploring and mastering new things. For the first time in his career, he gets to play two different roles, that of a sales person and that of his usual role of engineer. “It’s been an extremely enriching experience although not one without difficulties at the beginning,” he admits. “I had to learn how to develop a trusting relationship with my clients and how to chose the right words during our meetings.”

But today the results speak for themselves. “Samuel is always there to help his clients,” confides one of his colleagues. “He knows how to answer their questions even before they have had time to ask them.” His dedication to his clients made him the #1 sales engineer in Europe for 2015. Did this cause Samuel to sit back and relax? Not for a minute. Faithful to his creative streak, he carries on thinking up new ideas that Scality will be able to make the most of in the future.
