Feature List

The Scality Ring Organic Storage software solution possesses a number of properties and features that make it a continuously available, extremely scalable, high performance storage platform.

Scality Ring Organic Storage software:

1. Runs on standard Linux (CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu) servers.

2. Accomodates an unlimited number of servers, which may include servers with different CPU, disk size and type.

3. Implements a second generation peer-to-peer infrastructure with a distributed hash table (DHT) foundation, but without centralized intelligence, unique catalogs or hierarchies among the servers.

4. Provides optimized algorithms for key range computation and chord split detection.

5. Implements the concept of storage based on key-value pairs.

6. Splits (and reassembles) large files automatically without requiring sharding of any data by applications or application users.

7. Delivers object-based storage through a variety of different connectors.

8. Load balances the distribution of keys to all Ring nodes, whatever event types are triggered or requested (loss or addition of nodes, disks or servers, configuration modifications, etc.).

9. Supports up to five replicas per object, with the number set from the management console and controlled by the connectors.

10. Delivers self-healing resiliency through its ability to detect failures and launch recovery actions while maintaining an optimal level of service.

11. Supports auto-tiering, with automatic hierarchization of objects among several potentially geodistributed Rings or in a single Ring.

12. Supports the RAIN° architecture that permits a reduction in the number of protected volumes through the configuration of Rings in a cascaded layout.

13. Handles a virtually unlimited number of objects thanks to a system of 160-bit keys, of which 128 bits serve to identify the objects to the storage system.

14. Supports objects of all sizes without limits, including objects that change in size over their lifetimes.

15. Provides connectors to interface:

  • In native mode with HTTP/REST, RS2 and Amazon S3
  • In email support mode with Zimbra, Open-Xchange, Dovecot and Cyrus
  • In file mode with clients using REST°°, FUSE°°° or other standard NAS functions, developed by Scality or of partner origin (Gluster/RedHat and Panzura)
  • In block/iSCSI mode using generic Scality or partner solutions (TwinStrata and StorSimple)
  • With other application types, including Backup and Archivage (CommVault), ECM (Nuxeo), and virtual environnements (Parallels)

16. Offers the possibility of connector development based on the Scality API.

17. Conforms to the SNIA CDMI (Cloud Data Management Interface) standard at the server and client level.

18. Permits easy web-based management using the Supervisor console, which includes a dashboard providing a synthetic view of the storage environment.

19. Provides a comprehensive command line interface (RingSH) for Ring management.

20. Permits on-the-fly encryption for enhanced data security.

21. Enables billing by group and by client IP address.
