2016 was a stellar year. Unambiguous confirmation from the top analysts of our position as leader in the object storage industry, record-breaking revenue growth and massive numbers of new and upgrade installations have kept us very busy right up to New Year’s Eve. We did manage to slip in a little bit of quiet time at the beginning of the year and hope you have also had the opportunity to relax with friends and family. 2016 has been a banner year for object-based storage (which we’ll refer to here as “OBS”). Thanks to recent advances, OBS platforms can now address a range of use cases beyond just backup and archive—including mobility, analytics, compliance, and media rendering and production. As the IDC MarketScape says, “The storage market is making strides in grasping what OBS is all about, and adopting it.”* According to a separate IDC forecast, OBS capacity will grow at a CAGR of 30.7% from 2016 to 2020, reaching 293.7EB in 2020. Likewise, OBS market revenue is expected to hit $19.8 billion that same year.**.
On November 18th 2016, software and release engineers converged on Seattle for the RELENG Conference. This conference looks at best practices and innovation in release engineering. AWS has achieved incredible traction with services such as S3 for a wide variety of cloud application and service provider businesses. As the British Ministry of Information said during World War II, “Keep Calm and Carry On,” the motto for anyone claiming S3 API compatibility might be “Keep Calm, but Keep Up!” Since the introduction of the S3 service in 2006 there have been 60 releases of the service and protocol. From Portable Operating System for Unix Filesystems (POSIX), introduced first in 1988 to Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Service (S3), introduced in 2006, data persistence is experiencing a revolution. In 2013, AWS published the fact that their S3 platform housed over 2 trillion objects, and that the number was doubling every year. That would bring them to something like 16 trillion objects stored and if we assume that the average size of objects is only 256KB in size, the platform would currently house somewhere well into the Exabyte capacity range, putting the platform somewhere around 1% of all the world’s.

A couple of weeks ago, Scality and Dell announced they combined engineering efforts to offer the Dell SD7000-S. The combination of higher quality and more forms of capture, along with the more consumption on-demand, means a lot more storage in the middle. We’ve been seeing these trends up close for the last two years, and our conversations at NAB only reinforced them.
The ultimate goal of any organization that embraces scalable computing must be optimization at every layer, with the ability to enhance each layer without creating imbalance elsewhere. For example, increasing efficiency in Open Compute storage hardware requires increased responsibility for availability and durability in the software layer. Scality was present at the OpenStack Summit in Tokyo 2015. Let me let you in on a little secret. Data can really be in two places at once. Or three. Or even more. And you can do this without specialized WAN acceleration technologies or overlay/virtualization technologies on top of your storage. How is this possible?
